- The struggle between C and P continued, both Spain, France were catholic, both kings wanted to marry Elizabeth

- Catholic nobles wanted to replace Elizabeth with catholic Mary – Queen of Scotland, he grew up in France and she wanted E. throne

- E. recognised Spain as her main trade rival and enemy, Spain ruled the Netherlands, there were many people protestants and they were fighting for their independence. Spain adn France – rivals, so spanish soldiers could reach the Netherlands just from Spain by sea.

- E. helped the Dutch protestants – by using of English harbours from which they could attack spanish ships – in 1585– the Dutch lost the city of Antwerp – E. sent them soldiers and money to help -> it meant war on Spain

- E. was supported by sailors : John Hawkins and Francis Drake

- 1587 – Philip decided to attack England, but his army was still in Neatherlands – so he bulit up a huge fleet and hoped that catholic nobles in E. helped him, but they were attacted by Drakes ships and part of Spanish fleet was destroyed

- He rebuilt fleet – the biggest fleet ever! But E. fighting were better so England won the battle
